A very large number of people who have never attended a Sci-Fi convention have the idea that they are all about people standing in line to get autographs of actors while wearing Klingon makeup and costumes or pointed ears. I’m not saying that those stereotypes don’t exist but the Convention experience is much richer and diverse than you may have been led to believe. To get the best experience it is important first consider your interests and then match them to what conventions are available.

Conventions come in two primary flavors. Professional and fan run. Professional conventions should have actors who have appeared in genre television and films ready to sign autographs and have their photos taken with fans. Some of these conventions include the costs of autographs and photo sessions in the cost of admission others operate in more of an a la carte fashion.

Often genre conventions have previews of new shows and films, and usually an extensive dealer’s room where you can buy anything from jewelry, ornaments, t-shirts and action figures to full scale replicas and costumes…and more. While there are a number of professional promoters the best known and run are Chiller Theatre Expo, Creation Entertainment, Fed Con ( Germany ), Starland and Vulcon. Do expect things to be as advertised and run on time. Do not expect warm and fuzzy.

Warm and fuzzy is more the field of fan run conventions. Fans who get together to run conventions have a great deal of enthusiasm, but usually are run with a volunteer staff and can be a bit “bumpy” with organization of the activities. What you can expect? A movie room, anime room, gaming room, art show, dealer’s room, and various special interest group rooms and tables. It is a rare con that doesn’t have a dance and a masquerade. Many fan run conventions also have guests ranging from actors, authors, cartoonists, illustrators, scientists etc. You may also find workshops for writing, acting, art, costuming, make-up and special effects. It all varies from convention to convention and year to year. Older fan run conventions such as Aggie Con, Balticon, Bay Con, CONvergence, Dragon Con, ICON, Shore Leave, United Fan Con, Toronto Trek to name a few.

The following sections may help you in selecting the kind of convention you would enjoy the most. Don’t be afraid to try other sorts once you’ve sampled those that are in your comfort zone. Exploration can be fun:

• LITERARY CONVENTIONS

Love to read speculative fiction? Do you have an interest in attending workshops on writing and publishing? Would you like to mingle with like-minded fans and meet professionals in the field such as authors, editors, illustrators and publishers? Then a literary convention would be the place you might enjoy most. Conventions such as World Science Fiction Convention (which is where the Hugo awards are announced), the World Fantasy Convention, World Horror Convention, Balticon, Philcon, Lunacon, Boskone, Readercon, Wiscon and Capclave are all reader friendly and while you may find the occasional filking group, men in kilts, swords and women in medieval garb I doubt that you’ll see many people dressed like the attendees of the convention seen in the movie Galaxy Quest. OK maybe one or two but they are a tiny minority.

• MEDIA CONVENTIONS

Media conventions are very much about television and film. Science Fiction & Fantasy or Horror & Paranormal guests abound. You may meet and hear behind the scenes stories of actors and illustrators, SFX experts and make-up artists and a host of media professionals. Many of the attendees may be wearing costumes. Depending on whether you are going to a “pro” con or a fan run con the rest will vary greatly. Parties are expected and encouraged. At a pro convention this will take the form of a banquet with the guests at a fee and/or a dance or cocktail party all for various prices. Fan run convention also may have a price attached to a banquet or “private” gathering with a particular celebrity or celebrities but they will also have fee free dances, masquerades, art shows, filking, sword demonstrations etc. Toronto Trek, Celebration, BotCon, Dragon Con , Comic-Con ( both Dragon Con and Comicon will appear under many categories)

• GAMING CONVENTIONS

Gamers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, colors and ethnic backgrounds but they all have something in common. A love of games. Role playing, live, pen and paper, MMOG as well as video gamers and board gamers all have a lot of interactive fun at gaming conventions. You can meet game designers, try out new games that have yet to hit the general market, and play in tournaments for glory and prizes. Once an almost male-only pursuit, gaming now has a growing number of female enthusiasts Gaming has become so pervasive that it is now nearly socially acceptable to the mainstream public. Nearly.

There are giant conventions like GENCON and ORIGINS, where it is so crowded you may have trouble negotiating the exhibition halls due to the crowds. The upside is the great diversity and FREEBIES as there are so many gaming companies competing for your attention. Then there are the more intimate play intensive ones like Archon, CastleCon, Dragonflight Dreikonigsnacht (Twelfth Night), Festival of Dreams, HexaCon, KublaCon, MACE, MarsCon, Marmalade Dog, ShaunCon, Strategicon, The Once and Future Con, and many many more.

Keep in mind that many conventions other than pure gaming conventions have gaming tracks. If you like to game but want to do more than only game during the weekend you might look into some of the other cons with a strong gaming element.

• ANIME CONVENTIONS

For the older generation anime seems so foreign, even unreachable. It shouldn’t be. Yes, anime and its siblings manga and ahem *cough* hentai are of Japanese origin but the striking visual styles and beauty, the characters and stories connect with westerners as well as audiences in the east. Because they are animations they can either be sub-titled or dubbed in the language of the country where it is being broadcast. In anime the stars are the illustrators, authors, and voice actors. At conventions you will find many of these sorts of guests as well as companies promoting their projects. You will also find some of the most imaginative of costumes created and worn by fans. At larger conventions you may find multiple rooms running films day and night. At smaller ones perhaps just one room will be devoted to showing their favorites. There are often panels discussing aspects of cosplay, fan fiction, video games, favorite voice actors, anime series or movies. As in literary conventions there are often workshops. These workshops are mostly how to draw manga, make computer animation, or how to become a voice actor. The dealers room will be filled with DVDs , software, graphic novel manga, art books, apparel, toys and exotic ( for us ) foods.

While the U.S. and Canada have the largest SF conventions in the world the largest Anime conventions are Lucca Comics & Games in Lucca Italy ( 85,000 ) , Japan Expo in Paris France ( 83,000 ) Salon del Manga in Barcelona Spain ( 63,000 ) and Romics in Rome Italy ( 50,000 ). The big guys in North America are Anime Expo Los Angeles California (41,000), Otakon Baltimore Maryland (23,000) and A-Kon Dallas Texas (14,500). Hey, size isn’t everything and some of the smallest might be the way to start if you have never been to a con before!!

• HORROR CONVENTIONS

What a perfect place to let it all hang out (dating myself but who cares). Horror conventions revel in going over the top. Long live Elvira, Freddy Krueger, Jason, Dracula, Zacherley, Even the names of these conventions and expos are meant to be graphic illustrations of what you will find there. Chiller Theatre, Fangoria, Fright Night Film and Fantasy Fest, HorrorFind, HorrorHound Weekend, Spooky Empire. Nothing to subtle here. No sparing of the gore. It’s like the rollercoaster of genre conventions. If you have a strong stomach and a dark sense of humor you will have tons of fun. The dealer’s room, art show, video rooms all are in sync with the horror theme. Guests that reach back decades up to the present. Once again there is a chance to meet actors, artists and authors for autographs, photo shoots, and anecdotes. Attendees go wild with costumes and you can do so too even without a ton of money or a pile of cash. Try out your best monsterish clothes and make-up or come asa victim…or not. Costumes aren’t required, they are just fun. There is usually a monster mash even if that isn’t the name given. Some horror conventions invite guests that more about nostalgia than horror. Chiller Con is a good example of this. Some of their guests are Micky Dolenz from the Monkees, Ernest Borgnine , Lindsay Wagner, Brigitte Nielson, Katey Sagal (Married with Children), Stephen Baldwin, Daniel Baldwin, Barry Bostwick, Erin Murphy (Tabitha of Bewitched), Avery Brooks, Armin Shimmerman, Robert Picardo, Geri Reischel (Jan from The Brady Bunch), Susan Olsen (Cindy from The Brady Bunch),Joe Pantoliano,Richard Kiel (“Jaws” Moonraker), Lou Ferrigno, William B Davies (X-Files-Cancer Man), Stella Stevens, Frank Stallone, Ron Bumblefoot ( Guns N Roses ) and a host of others.

• COMIC CONVENTION

When you think of a comic book convention you will probably think of a sea of old comic books, toys, Star Wars stuff, Star Trek stuff, action figures, collectible card games and magazines for sale and you would be right but that is only a part and an increasingly small part of the experience. You will find illustrators, authors, publishers and very often interesting workshops and panels that deal with every aspect of the industry past, present and future. There are the costume contingents that always show up at the larger conventions and some are so good that you could almost believe you were seeing superheroes and villains walk out of the pages and off the screen to meet you and be photographed. Some cons such as Dragon Con and Comic-Con began solely as comic conventions but grew to tremendous size, scope and diversity that they have transcended the genre that gave rise to them. Even those such as HEROES which remains focused on comics manages to have a number of other aspects and should be able to keep the whole family amused for the weekend. Comic conventions often have a lot of pop culture and nostalgia guests. So if you would like to see people like Creature, Parthenon and Fat Mama from Who wants to be a Superhero or maybe even Stan Lee himself, you might get your chance. How about James & Oliver Phelps who played the Weasley Twins in the Harry Potter movies ? Or perhaps Sean Astin or Billy Boyd and even Elijah Wood . From Heroes Hayden Paniterre and Masi Oka, or Ice-T…yes I said Ice-T AND his swimsuit-model wife Coco.

For a walk down memory lane there is Erik Estrada, Betsy Palmer, Soupy Sales, Richard Hatch, John Saxon, Adam West and Burt Ward ( Batman and Robin) , Julie Newmar, Peter Mayhew, Eddie Byrnes (77 Sunset Strip), Erin Gray (Buck Rodgers), Gary Coleman, Lou Ferrigno and on and on. Some are from your childhood others are from your parents childhoods. I can tell you that when I unexpectedly got to meet the very ladylike and gracious Betsy Palmer it was a thrill.

The bottom line is conventions are places where adults can go and play and slough off the average workday week . Have fun !!

For a walk down memory lane there is Erik Estrada, Betsy Palmer, Soupy Sales, Richard Hatch, John Saxon, Adam West and Burt Ward (Batman and Robin) , Julie Newmar, Peter Mayhew, Eddie Byrnes (77 Sunset Strip), Erin Gray (Buck Rodgers), Gary Coleman, Lou Ferrigno and on and on. Some are from your childhood others are from your parents childhoods. I can tell you that when I unexpectedly got to meet the very ladylike and gracious Betsy Palmer, it was a thrill.

The bottom line is conventions are places where adults can go and play and slough off the average workday week. Have fun !!

Life By The Bay In Maryland

Many attractions line the harbor in Baltimore Maryland. From the convention center to the seafood restaurants to on-the-water activities, Maryland’s largest city boasts many possibilities for those that love life by the water. For many, it is the convenience of proximity to the harbor and for others it may just be the feeling of living by the sea without the sand in their shorts. Whatever the case, Maryland as a state offers a large variety of cultures, as different as north and south.

While Maryland’s rural areas maintain a southern charm, the densly populated cities, such as Baltimore, more closely resemble northern states, such as New York or Pennsylvania. The weather within the majority of the state is not too hot nor is it too cold for the average person, since its general location is neither too far north, nor too far south. It’s close proximity to water allows fresh breezes in the summer time and the lower altitudes provide a protection from the colder climates that its northern neighbors suffer.

Maryland also proudly embraces its deep-rooted history in the founding of the United States. Being the seventh state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, it shares a place in the first 13 colonies and many historical landmarks are intact and ready to be appreciated. It is often referred to as “America in Miniature” due to its variety of landscapes, weather and historical significance.

If it’s the life by the bay that fits the bill, there are plenty of options along the Chesapeake to suit that need. If it’s a small town scene you’re looking for, yes, Maryland has plenty of them as well. Busy city life? Sure thing. The fact is, Maryland can claim nearly every lifestyle that the rest of America’s United States has to offer, and with it’s small size and relatively small population, it will never
1000
get too crowded.

Hi, I'll be visiting the Baltimore Aquarium and staying over night in the Harbor Court Hotel on February 13th – 14th with my boyfriend. My birthday is February 10th and our 1 year is on the 17th so I'm looking for a formal and romantic restaurant nearby to celebrate these days along with Valentine's Day.

Many attorneys – in Philadelphia and nationwide – make the mistake of conducting their online marketing efforts in accordance with pre-internet era marketing strategies. This is a BIG MISTAKE!

By marketing the Old School way, you’re missing out on numerous dynamic tactics – ones that can drive business to you, and help propel your firm to the top of the heap of competing law firms.

It’s not enough anymore to just stick a legal ad in the Philadelphia Yellow Pages and call it a day. Attorneys who do so get left behind – quickly. In today’s high-tech world, it’s the smart lawyers who seek out expert legal marketing firms, so they can conduct a series of strategic, multi-pronged online marketing campaigns.

New technologies today let a business track its advertising expenses like never before, and detail efficiencies (which method is driving traffic to you, and which method is lagging behind) in ways unimaginable even a decade before.

Pre-internet, it often took months – and sometimes years – to learn the results of which ads or marketing methods were working, and which where wasting precious advertising resources.

Today, however, numerous programs allow you to track your results on a daily basis, so you can stop hemorrhaging money on methods that aren’t working, and divert them immediately to ones that are. Here’s how it works:

Advertising Metrics

One of the best-kept secrets to emerge is high-tech advertising metrics. Using a dynamic phone system, you can monitor incoming phone traffic from virtually any form of advertising, including yellowbook, yellow pages, TV, radio, pay-per-click, organic Google and even business cards. Each campaign is assigned a new dynamic phone number, which can be monitored from a web-based user interface with charts and graphs. A master system knows (by monitoring the “referring” domain) exactly where the visitor came from, and displays the appropriate phone number.

This technology is particularly valuable to service businesses – ones that deal in financial issues, or those of a sensitive nature. For most clients, bankruptcy is a very sensitive issue, and many potential clients feel far more comfortable discussing matters on the phone than blindly submitting their private info via an email or contact form.

To date, the majority of law firms are not able to measure their return on leads (or new clients) that they acquire via telephone. Innovative state-of-the-art systems and technologies now exist, and let attorneys pinpoint – down to a very granular level – exactly where the most new business is coming from. The icing on the cake? They also let you track where the most profitable business is coming from. Talk about advertising efficiencies – dynamic phone systems that track advertising metrics are at the forefront of legal marketing technologies, and savvy attorneys are jumping on board!

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (or SEO, as it’s commonly referred to) involves a few different sub-tactics that, when combined, help organically increase your business’ search engine ranking. By strategically weaving keywords throughout your web content, implementing a targeted linkback campaign, as well as a number of other techniques, you can propel your firm’s rankings naturally. The best part – it’s a small upfront investment and the pay-offs can be unfathomable.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising

The one downside to SEO is that it can take a few weeks (and sometimes even months) to see measurable results. Because the process relies on the various search engines themselves to seek out and index your site, it’s not an instantaneous process.

One strategy many savvy business owners use to supplement the process involves integrating a pay-per-click advertising campaign in tandem with a SEO campaign. For a pre-set price (one that you determine beforehand), you can allocate a set amount of your advertising budget towards buying online ads that appear on relevant websites and in the sponsored areas of Google. What makes this an optimal way to advertise is that with today’s technologies, your ads appear to a targeted audience – one as wide or narrow as you choose it to be. Many law firms target specific geographic regions and as such each pay-per-click campaign should be limited by geography. Your ad should not display for someone in Baltimore Maryland if you only service Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

By choosing strategic keywords along with utilizing negative keywords, you can make sure your advertisement is seen by top-shelf prospects, and that your money isn’t being wasted on directing your ad to non-relevant ones.

These are just a few of the best-kept legal marketing secrets that many laypersons are unaware of, but ones that can make or break a business. So the question then becomes not, “Should I really use these methods,” but instead, “How many of my competitors are?” For attorneys in Philadelphia, West Chester, Exton, and beyond, state-of-the-art legal marketing isn’t an option – it’s a crucial necessity to surviving and thriving in today’s business environment.

As an attorney, you can run your business one of two ways: continually looking over your shoulder at your competitors, or running far ahead of the pack and never looking back. By utilizing these strategic marketing tactics, you’ll be using your advertising dollars to their maximum efficiencies, and help drive your firm’s legal marketing to soaring new heights of success!

Date Beautiful People In Baltimore.

The illustrious state of Maryland is home to 5,779,400 locals (as of 2009). It’s capital city, Annapolis, is the busiest sailing address on the Eastern Seaboard. If you’re looking for places to go or people to meet, Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city with bars and restaurants on every corner.

Vacations and time out from work are about unwinding and spending quality time with those you hold nearest and dearest in your heart. It’s the time to see new things and to try something you’ve never done before. When you visit Maryland use this precious time to check out the shopping district, art museum and local cuisine.

Annapolis is the county seat of Ann Arundel County with a modest population of 38,986 (as of 2009) which is located on the Chesapeake Bay at the foot of the Severn River. Located in the same region as the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan, Annapolis was the acting capital of the U.S. between 1783-1784 and is also the home of the United States Naval Academy.

Whether you live in Maryland or are just passing by, this great state has an array of entertainment and attractions if you’re looking to meet singles in Annapolis and Baltimore, on a romantic getaway with your sweetheart or are holidaying with your family.

Couples looking to spark up some romance in the North east can enjoy short distances to restaurants, a never ending coastline dotted with fine dining on the waters edge, waterfront hotels and a diverse selection of B&B’s.

Families looking for a friendly vibe and a chance to meet the locals, the first weekend pursuing Memorial Day is when the Western Maryland Blues Fest comes to town. This annual festivity serves up classical blues tunes and sees many loyal blues music lovers from across the world make the annual pilgrimage.

If
1000
you are looking to meet up with single guys or girls in Maryland and Baltimore, the choice of venues is unbelievable with something hip and happening taking place every night of the week.

Howl At The Moon will have you clapping singing and dancing to the greatest Rock ‘N’ Roll Dueling Piano Show in the world. Audience participation is mandatory and you will be well entertained by their highly gifted entertainers. Great for any occasion including hens nights, bucks nights or if you simply feel the urge to shake your boody. Everyone at Howl At The Moon is in a great mood and is an ideal location to meet singles in Maryland and Baltimore.

The Baja Beach Club, put plainly is a gold mine for picking up guys and girls. With a young clientele, the drinks are cheap and pumps out great music all night long. One review described the Baja Beach Club as a “dirty place with dirty people” – you can assess that comment as you please! With a cover charge of just $5.00 be sure to wear something trendy and stylish. With a frat house mentality you just know that by visiting the Baja Beach Club you will leave as a different person than when you first arrived.

If you are looking to meet new people in Maryland and Baltimore but would prefer to do so in a slightly more civilized manner and especially if you are new there, online dating sites in Maryland and Baltimore have thousands of singles looking for casual dating or life long romances. It’s particularly difficult to know where to meet new people in a new town, and singles chat rooms or free dating sites in Maryland and Baltimore should be something to consider.

Millions of American singles are taking the leap into cyber romance so don’t limit your options by not trying online dating if your priority is to find romantic chemistry.

How Does Menopause Effect Weight Gain?

Ask Dr. Steve –

Dr. Steve,

I just turned 49 and am starting menopause. I also noticed that I’m gaining weight for no reason. I haven’t changed anything in my lifestyle. What should I do?

Shelly H.

Baltimore, MD

Shelly,

This is a great question with so many people hitting our age. Weight gained after menopause seems to be harder to lose.

It is very common to put on weight at this time and while some of this may be due to lifestyle changes, that does not explain why suddenly women develop a tendency to put on weight at different parts of the body, especially the abdomen, while any weight gained when younger tended to be centered on the hips and thighs.

Hormonal changes do have a part to play in this, although the process is not completely understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for the ovulation process.

Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it almost certainly is the reason why female bodies change shape.

Reversing course to lose unwanted pounds requires strict attention to healthy eating habits, an active lifestyle and diligence to keep it all on track. If you do not adjust your eating habits you will probably find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not need as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormone therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be surprised to hear that studies have shown that hormone therapy does not cause weight gain.

Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormone therapy but this is usually temporary and they have not gained any fat.

Hormone therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. However, hormone therapy has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies.

There’s no magic to avoiding weight gain as you get older. The strategies at any age remain the same: Watch what you eat and get that body moving.

Watch what you eat – Eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fiber, and avoid sugar and sugar products. Pay attention to the foods you’re eating and slightly reduce the amount of calories you consume each day.

Choose a varied diet composed mainly of fruits and vegetables that will help you to safely cut back on calories and lose weight. Reduce the amount of high fat foods you consume.

You notice I say slightly reduce calories vs. substantially the reason being is to prevent your body from responding to the ‘starvation effect’ by conserving energy and making extra pounds harder to shed. Weight maintenance is a gradual but consistent process.

Move that Body. Aerobic exercise boosts your metabolism and helps you burn fat. Strength training exercises increase muscle mass, boost your metabolism and strengthen your bones.

Spend more time doing the things you really enjoy that also get you moving. Do more gardening. Take longer walks or start riding a bike. Your goal is to be active for a total of 30 minutes or more daily.

Accept the changes to the shape of your body. If you are not overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, that is fine.

Consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program if you have any medical conditions or your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of menopause and weight gain.

There are three critical building blocks that must be stacked together to achieve weight loss: eating healthier and smaller portions (consuming fewer calories), increasing expenditure of energy through simple exercise (using up more calories) and having the mind set (mental discipline) to change your habits into a positive life program of health and vitality.

In April 1992, Camden Yards opened it’s doors as a brand new $100 million facility that was designed under the architectural guidance of HOK Sport and constructed by Danobe Construction. Located just two blocks from Babe Ruth’s birthplace in downtown Baltimore, the centerfield at this 85-acre facility is also the site at which Ruth’s father once operated Ruth’s Café. In the beginning, there was some debate over the name to be given to the new ballpark. Some felt that it should be named Oriole Park after it’s tenants, the Baltimore Orioles, but others were set on calling it Camden Yards. In a pleasing compromise, the park was ultimately named Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Just like every other ballpark in Major League Baseball, a number of memorable events have been hosted at Camden Yards. Among them, the 1993 All-Star game was held here. In September 1995, Cal Ripken Jr. awed fans by competing in his 2,131st consecutive game and, ultimately, breaking the record set by Lou Gehrig. The following year, in 1996, Eddie Murray hit his 500th career homerun. In addition, the only no-hitter ever pitched at this ballpark was thrown by Hideo Nomo in 2001.

Spectators who visit Camden Yards will be greeted with a variety of amenities, including the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame memorabilia, the Camden Club and sports bar, a cafeteria and gift shop. Additionally, fans can enjoy a stroll on Eutaw Street, which houses cement imprinted bronze baseballs that are designed to commemorate homeruns that have been hit at the facility. The design is Camden Yards is in amenity in itself as it has revolutionized the way that new facilities are constructed. A combination of steel columns, beams and trusses have made it a classic, while it’s 48,000 spectator capacity have made it accessible. Although it’s concrete trusses, a brick facade, natural grass playing surface and an asymmetrical playing field have served as inspiration to modern facilities being built, Oriole Park at Camden Yards itself was influenced by other ballparks, including Fenway Park, Ebbets, Forbes and Wrigley Field.

Baltimore Orioles fans can also participate in regular tours at Camden Yards, which includes a closeup look at the suites, scoreboards and control rooms, press levels and the dugout. Public tours are given daily with private tours available upon reservation. For those who desire an even closer look, perhaps a meeting with one or more of the Baltimore Orioles players or coaches would fit the bill. Time permitting, baseball notables may sometimes be found signing autographs up until 45 minutes prior to the opening pitch.

Collectors who wish to request an autograph from any one of the players on the Baltimore Orioles roster should send their letter and a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) to:

Player’s Name

c/o Baltimore Orioles

Oriole Park At Camden Yards

333 W. Camden Street

Baltimore, MD 21201

Fans requesting an autograph should limit their request to two items per letter. Popular items to have signed include photos, index or trading cards, baseballs, etc. Patience is key when requesting autographs through the mail, but the best time to reach an athlete is often during the off-season.

VA Maryland Health Care System Honors More than 800 Volunteers During National Volunteer Week – Yahoo! News

During National Volunteer Week – April 10 -16 – the Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System plans activities and awards banquets to honor the nearly 888 community volunteers who dedicate their time to serving the needs of Maryland’s Veterans.

Baltimore, MD (Vocus/PRWEB) April 11, 2011

During National Volunteer Week – April 10 -16 – the Veterans Affairs (VA) Maryland Health Care System plans activities and awards banquets to honor the nearly 888 community volunteers who dedicate their time to serving the needs of Maryland’s Veterans. These VA volunteers devoted more than 102, 250 hours of service worth more than $1.2 million to honor and serve Veterans at three inpatient facilities and five community based outpatient clinics throughout the state during fiscal year 2010. This year, more than 25 volunteers—including adults and teens—are being honored with the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award for their volunteer support throughout the health care system.

“Veterans gave their best for our nation. We have an obligation to honor and respect their service, and our VA volunteers fulfill that obligation daily,” said Dennis H. Smith, director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. “Volunteers play a crucial role in the care Veterans receive at each of our facilities throughout the state.”

The VA Maryland Health Care System also launched five new volunteer assignments this year, including the Welcome Center Program, the Respite Volunteer Program, the Peer-to-Peer Program, the Veterans History Project, and the Hospice Visitor Program. At the Perry Point VA Medical Center, a division of the VA Maryland Health Care System, the Welcome Center Program occupies a formerly vacant building at the entrance to the campus. Now transformed into a Welcome Center, volunteers greet individuals who are unfamiliar with the campus, answering questions and directing them to their needed destinations. In the Respite Volunteer Program, volunteers are specially trained and assigned as buddies to approved Veteran patients to give their primary non-paid caregivers a little time off, while visiting with the Veteran for added socialization. In the Peer-to-Peer Program, specially trained volunteers are matched with individuals in the outpatient mental health program and serve as a role model for peers by exhibiting competency in personal recovery and the use of coping skills. The volunteers perform a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to older Veterans, in helping them regain independence. For the Veterans History Project, volunteers interview and capture stories of military service from Veteran inpatients and outpatients. The stories are captured on DVD’s and copies are filed in the Library of Congress. In the Hospice Volunteer Program, specially trained volunteers visit hospice inpatients to provide support and assistance for Veterans at the end stages of life.

“Volunteers offer a link to the community, remind Veterans that their service has not been forgotten, and often provide the only visits for some Veterans whose families are distant or non-existent,” said Susan Kern, program manager for Voluntary Service for the VA Maryland Health Care System. “Volunteers work on inpatient units, at community living facilities, in therapy areas, and assist as drivers to help bring patients to and from clinic appointments. Some participate in recreational activities, birthday celebrations or holiday events, and others simply sit and visit with Veterans, helping improve their overall quality of life.”

National Volunteer Week is a good time to learn about volunteer opportunities throughout the VA Maryland Health Care System. For more information about VA volunteer opportunities, please call 1-800-463-6295, ext. 5505 or go to http://www.maryland.va.gov and click on “Volunteer or Donate.”

“We can all show our gratitude and support to Maryland’s Veterans by volunteering at a local VA facility,” Smith said.

The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) provides a broad spectrum of medical, surgical, rehabilitative, mental health and outpatient care to veterans at two medical centers, one community living & rehabilitation center and five outpatient clinics located throughout the state. More than 52,000 veterans from various generations receive care from the VAHMCS annually. Nationally recognized for its state-of-the-art technology and quality patient care, the VAHMCS is proud of its reputation as a leader in veterans’ health care, research and education. It costs nothing for Veterans to enroll for health care with the VA Maryland Health Care System and it could be one of the more important things a Veteran can do. For information about VA health care eligibility and enrollment or how to apply for a VA medical care hardship to avoid future copayments for VA health care, interested Veterans are urged to call the Enrollment Center for the VA Maryland Health Care System, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1-800-463-6295, ext. 7324 or visit http://www.maryland.va.gov.

Baltimore, Maryland is a grand old city that according to some has seen much better days in the past. True, some neighborhoods of the city are not “ideal tourist attractions,” shall we say. But there is still plenty to do and see in Baltimore for the whole family on most weekends.

1) Inner Harbor is the obvious jewel of Baltimore’s crown. It’s a gorgeous horse-shoe shaped inner harbor surrounded by restaurants and eateries, and a great promenade that features the all-sail man-of-war battleship ship USS Constellation, launched in 1854.

2) National Aquarium, also at the Inner Harbor, is a must see indoor collection of all kinds of fishes (including sharks), reptiles and endangered species. Don’t forget to stop by at the glass-encased “Tropical Forest” at the top of aquarium’s cylinder-shaped imposing structure.

3) Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum is a modest little three-story house where the horror master lived during the 1830s and ’40s until he died. “This place gives me the creeps!” said Vincent Price, for a good reason. Find out why.

4) Babe Ruth Museum and the Oriole Park at Camden Yards (home of Baltimore Orioles) with seating for 48,000 are perfect for all baseball fans. Babe Ruth’s house on 216 Emory Street – not that far from the Oriole Park – is the place where the legendary slugger was born in 1895.

5) Baltimore Museum of Art is right next to Johns Hopkins University campus in North Baltimore. It’s an important art center, like the private Walter’s Art Museum, where important exhibitions are held around the year. Admission is free, except for special shows.

6) The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum is a unique delight for all history buffs and a great place to visit to appreciate the contributions of many important African-Americans.

7) Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is where the American National Anthem was born during the Battle of Baltimore, September 13-14, 1814. The star-shaped fort is not within Baltimore City itself and is ten miles down south. But it is a unique and important historic site that is worth the extra travel.

The state of Maryland had an average car insurance premium of $2,295 in 2009 as compared to the national average, which is $1,735. For most of the residents of Baltimore, the average work commute time is 31.1 minutes. Baltimore reported 41 fatal car crashes in 2007, with a total of 105 people and 55 automobiles involved in those crashes. The average speed of those involved was 30 MPH.

Baltimore reported about 5,816 auto thefts in 2007. The Top 10 List of most stolen vehicles in 2008 for the state of Maryland included the 1994 Honda Accord, 2000 Honda Civic, 1990 Toyota Camry, 1996 Dodge Caravan, 1995 Jeep Cherokee/ Grand Cherokee, 2001 Dodge Stratus, 1997 Ford Taurus and the 1998 Plymouth Voyager. These statistics about Baltimore and the state of Maryland affect how Baltimore car insurance premiums are determined. Providers use statistics along with other factors to arrive at premium amounts, which can result in cheaper car insurance rates or sometimes higher rates depending on where you fall among the statistics.

Auto Insurance Requirements for Baltimore, Maryland Residents

Maryland is one of the few “no fault” states with add-on coverage for Personal Injury Protection (PIP), generally a $2,500 limit. This protection will help pay for medical expenses, lost wages due to time out of work and funeral expenses if necessary following an accident. Maryland is also on a Tort system, requiring an at-fault driver to pay for repairs in the event of an accident. Maryland residents must carry liability insurance, which will pay for damages or injuries to the other driver, any passengers involved and the other vehicle in the event of an accident for which the insured is responsible.

Bodily Injury Liability limits in Maryland are $20,000 per injured person and $40,000 total per accident. The Property Damage Liability limit is $15,000. The coverage may also be seen written as 20/40/15.

A minimum Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage of $20,000 per person and $40,000 total per accident is required for all MD drivers (20/40 UM). In the event that a Baltimore, Maryland resident is involved in an accident with a driver that has no insurance, this coverage will assist with repairs to their vehicle and any medical expenses incurred. This also applies when a driver has insufficient car insurance to pay for the amount of damages, or if there’s a hit-and-run incident. Collision and comprehensive coverage are not law requirements in Maryland, but are strongly recommended if your vehicle is of value and you feel it’s worth the added coverage.

Searching for Baltimore Insurance Online

If you are searching online for cheap auto insurance in Baltimore, there are several things to consider so you will end up with the best policy for your needs. Get quotes from various insurance providers online by typing in the required information about yourself and your car. Once you get several quotes, make a comparison of the financial stability and customer service ratings of each auto insurance company before choosing a provider.

When filling out the information for your quotes, always include accurate information. If you don’t, it could lead to the cancellation of your policy. Keep your policy information updated, such as job changes, an address change or additional family members that need to be added to your policy. Some changes can result in lower car insurance premiums as rates can fluctuate based on various factors.

Don’t be discouraged…cheap car insurance in Baltimore is just a click away!
